The Ultimate Decluttering Checklist for South African Homes

Decluttering advice usually assumes you have a weekend free and a garage to stage everything in. Most of us don't. This is a room-by-room checklist you can work through in short sessions — 20 to 30 minutes at a time — without turning your home upside down.

Kitchen drawers (20 minutes)

  • Empty one drawer completely onto the counter.
  • Sort into keep, donate, and bin — be honest about duplicate utensils.
  • Put the "keep" pile back using a drawer divider so it can't slide back into chaos.

Kitchen cupboards (30 minutes)

  • Check expiry dates on anything in the back half of the cupboard first — this is usually where the biggest win is.
  • Consolidate half-used bags into stackable containers so cupboard space isn't lost to bag shapes.
  • Move rarely-used appliances to the highest shelf, and daily items to eye level.

Bathroom cabinet (15 minutes)

  • Toss anything past its expiry date — most people are surprised how much this is.
  • Group by category (skincare, medicine, cleaning) rather than by size.
  • Add an over-cabinet basket for anything that doesn't fit inside the cabinet itself.

Closet (30 minutes, one section at a time)

  • Pull everything you haven't worn in 12 months into a separate pile.
  • Fold, don't hang, anything that's currently a heap on a shelf — a closet folder makes this a five-second habit instead of a chore.
  • Use hanging space more efficiently with a vertical hanging organizer before assuming you need more closet.

Entryway (15 minutes)

  • Everything that isn't shoes, keys, or an umbrella doesn't belong here — relocate it.
  • A stackable shoe storage set stops shoes from becoming the default entryway floor covering.

Living room surfaces (20 minutes)

  • Remote controls, chargers and coasters are the usual coffee-table clutter — a remote control holder solves more of this than people expect.
  • One basket per surface, everything else goes to its actual home elsewhere in the house.

The habit that actually keeps it decluttered

Decluttering once doesn't stick — the maintenance is what matters. Once every space has a proper container or organizer, put-away time drops from "I'll deal with it later" to a few seconds, which is the real reason clutter doesn't come back.
